Who to ask

When you send us a note

The form asks for your email and your message. Your name and your phone number are there if you want us to use them, and the form works without them. You can pick what the note is about, which only sets the subject line so we can find it again. You can attach up to four photographs, which is there for a boat that needs winterizing or a fish for the wall. We use what you send to write or call you back about what you asked, and for nothing else.

A photograph you attach travels with the note, arrives in the same inbox, and sits there the way any attachment does. Your phone shrinks it before it leaves, so what reaches us is a smaller copy. Photographs often carry the place and time they were taken inside the file. We do not read that, and we do not strip it either, so send a picture you are happy for us to have.

That note arrives as an email in the store’s inbox. A mail service called Resend delivers it, so your message passes through their systems on the way. Nobody else receives it. It sits in our inbox the way any email does, and we clear old enquiries out when they are no longer useful to either of us. If you would rather not use the form at all, the phone number above reaches the same two people.

The form has one hidden field that people never see and never fill in. If it comes back filled in, the message was sent by a machine and we drop it. We also count how many messages arrive from one internet address in a short time, so a flood of automated ones cannot bury a real one. Neither of those is used to identify anybody.

What we do not do

• No advertising cookies or pixels from anybody’s ad network.
• Nothing that follows you from this site to another one. The video on the About page is the one exception, only once you press play, and it is covered below.
• No mailing list. Sending us a note does not sign you up for anything.
• We do not sell, rent or share what you send us.

Counting visits

We use Google Analytics to count visits: which pages get read and for about how long, the kind of device, the town or region a visit comes from, and whether someone tapped to call the store or sent us a note. It tells us what people look for before they drive out, and nothing in it names you. Google handles what it measures for us, under its own terms, and Google Analytics does not keep your internet address.

If you would rather not be counted, blocking cookies in your browser stops it, and so does Google’s opt-out add-on.

What is kept on your device

Two things, and neither says who you are. If you pause the video at the top of the home page, your browser remembers that, so it stays paused next time. And Google Analytics keeps two small cookies of this site’s own, so it can tell a return visit from a first one. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes both.

The ordinary records a web host keeps

The site is hosted by Vercel, which keeps the records every web host keeps: the time of a request, the page asked for, and the internet address it came from. Those exist to serve the site and keep it standing up. We do not use them to build a picture of anybody.

The readings, the map and the reviews

The lake level and the wind are fetched by our own server before the page reaches you, so your browser never talks to Environment and Climate Change Canada or to our weather station. While the page is open in front of you, it asks our own server for those two readings again every few minutes so the numbers do not go stale. That request goes to us and nowhere else, and it carries nothing about you beyond the ordinary records described below.

The picture of the marina from above is a still image on our server, not an embedded map, so nothing is loaded from Google when you look at it. Following a link to Google Maps, to Apple Maps, to Facebook or to our Google reviews takes you to their site, where their own terms and their own tracking apply, and that is outside what we control. We are not told who follows one, and leaving a review is between you and Google.

The video on the About page

The film about us on the About page was made by StellerVista Credit Union and plays from YouTube. Until you press play, the page shows a photograph of our own from our own server, and YouTube is not contacted at all. When you press play, the video comes from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player, and from then on YouTube’s own privacy policy applies to what it collects, which is outside what we control. No other page on this site loads anything from YouTube.

Children

This site is not aimed at children and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you think a child has sent us something, tell us and we will delete it.

Asking what we hold and complaining if you need to

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask us to delete it. Email or call and we will answer. Under Canadian privacy law you can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or in this province to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia. We would rather you told us first so we can fix it.

If this page changes

This describes the site as it is today. When the site changes, this page changes with it and the date below moves. How the site is built to be usable is a separate page: accessibility. The rules for using the site are on terms.
